Allu Arjun rocks in Malayalam

The worst fears of Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal have come true. Telugu star Allu Arjun, a rank outsider to Malayalam cinema, has taken Kerala by storm with the release of the dubbed version of his Arya 2.

Allu Arjun's Arya 2 has taken a super opening in Kerala. The film released in 65 screens on Friday (Feb 5), and has grossed Rs 67 lakhs in three days, which by any yardstick is fantastic! and with this they are increasing the screens to 100 from 2nd week. The film is expected to recover the costs with in a week which is a great feat.

The film has taken an M & M kind of opening in the state and is running to packed houses even in smaller stations like Perinthalmanna, Tanur in Malappuram district. Says Divya Pictures Ravi, the distributor of the film: Allu Arjun is turning out to be a phenomenon in Kerala. Arya 2 has taken the best opening of 2010 in Kerala especially in Malabar area. The film is sure going to be a super hit.

With the success of the film, Allu Arjun — popularly known as Bunny — has become a youth icon in Kerala. In fact, a market survey states that he is way ahead, in terms of popularity, than other young Malayali actors like Prithviraj and Jayasuriya. The stylish star’s earlier Telugu films like Arya, Happy, Desamuduru and Parugu have all been dubbed into Malayalam and turned out to be huge hits. It was his films that started the trend of Telugu mass commercial films being dubbed into Malayalam.

The rights of Arya 2, which were purchased for Rs 1.05 crore, is expected to take a distributor’s share close to Rs 2 crore in Kerala. Allu’s next release Varudu, in which Tamil actor Arya plays villain, is reported to have been sold for Rs 1.5 crore!

Meanwhile, Tamil superstar Ajith's new film Asal which released last Friday worldwide could only release in Cochin area of Kerala. In Malabar and Travancore areas which form 75 percent of the box-office Allu Arjun's Arya-2 was preferred by theatres over Ajith's Asal!

Allu Arjun, after Arya 2 has the same kind of opening a Vijay film has in Kerala says Rasheed Kottapuram a theatre manager in Malappuram area.
