Ram Gopal Varma Blogs The power of an IdeaNothing is more truer than that line from the”Idea” campaign which says “An idea can change your life”. My w

Nothing is more truer than that line from the”Idea” campaign which says “An idea can change your life”. My whole life and also my career as a director is a living testimony of that truth both in positive and negative ways. It could range from a film like “Satya” coming from an Idea like “We always hear about gangsters only when they either kill or when they die. But what do they do in between?” to “RGV ki Aag” coming from an Idea like “What if Sholay kind of story happens in today’s times?”. We all know the sum effect of those two Ideas and where they landed up but at the time the Ideas came to me I was equally excited with both, if anything maybe much more with the “Sholay” Idea. But irrespective of the strengths and the final effects of those 2 Ideas one common thing that both of them achieved is that they changed the direction of my life though in far different routes.

The story of Paritala Ravi and Maddelu Cheruvu Suri has been happening in real life since more than a decade and in spite of that nobody ever thought of making a film on them. Whether I will screw up their story in “Rakta Charitra” like “Aag” or make it a cult classic like “Satya” only time will tell, but the fact that about 200 people are working non-stop since 6 months and more than 30 Crores is being spent on it is the point I am making. Apart from that the mind space of so many people being occupied whether it’s of the people who are involved with the original incidents or of the people who want to just debate or discuss its proceedings or of the three marketing teams that are breaking their heads to figure out how to sell the concept of a film being made in 2 parts and then of people belonging to various factions and parties who are wondering about who the film is going to side between Ravi and Suri, and also Paritala Ravi and Suri becoming famous even outside their State, the sum centre stage culprit what caused all the above happenings is nothing but just my Idea “What if I make a film on Ravi and Suri?”.

Lot of my detractors wonder how in spite of the kind of films I make, I still can go on doing what I want to do and exactly as I wish. The secret of that is nothing but the power of the Idea I get at any given point of time and my ability to make the people who matter to the project also feel that it is powerful.

Many people think I work on multiple films at the same time which is not at all true, but what is true is that I work on multiple Ideas at any given time. Each of them to be developed into a script and then into a film, can take their own sweet time depending on so many factors but they are continuously brewing in my head and in various others heads where I put them, namely writers and Assistant directors. For instance I had the Idea of “Sarkar” for 5 years before I got around to making it. The Idea of “Ek” I have since 8 years and I don’t know when I will make it. It could be next year or 5 years from now. The moment I get an Idea I will put a writer onto it and then periodically discuss with him on its progression depending on my priorities. But the moment I talk about my Idea of a certain film, the media will project it as it’s already in the process of being made and hence it will appear as if I am working simultaneously on many projects.

For instance, I am working on the Ideas of “Raksha”, “Department” and “God and Sex” which are tentatively titled and apart from them I am also working on 10 other untitled Ideas which all will take their own time to get made. But the beauty of each one of those Ideas is that each of them is like a ball of bundled up potential energy just waiting to get kinetic. They can anywhere become a 5 Crore film to a 50 Crore film whenever their time comes.

Recently an Ad agency came to me to direct an Ad and I told them that I can’t think of directing a 60/30 second Ad with a creative given by someone else suiting the requirement of the consumer and the client which is how the advertisement Industry works.

I said instead of that I would make a full length movie with the products name. When they asked me what I meant I said, “For example, what if I make a movie called ‘LUX’. The story will be about a village girl who believes that bathing with a lux soap will make her as beautiful as a film actress and then in the course of the story she becomes a star and actually models for “Lux” in the climax.

They were taken aback with a tremendous excitement on my Idea as they never ever heard of this kind of an extreme product placement idea before. They realized it that it’s not an In-film Ad but it’s a Film-In Ad, and they gave me a fantastic financial deal for it.

Whether I will make that film called “Lux” or not is a secondary point, but I just felt like bragging about the ‘power of my Ideas’. Ha Ha!

Telugu Movie review - Darling

Jeevi rating: 3/5
Punchline
: Patchy Entertainment
Genre:
Romance/Family Drama
Type:
Straight
Banner:
Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra

Cast: Prabhas, Kajal Agarwal, Shraddha Das, Prabhu, Ahuti Prasad, Kota, Srinivasa Reddy, Raja Sridhar, MS Narayana, Mukesh Rushi, Chandra Mohan, Sivannarayana, Tulasi etc.

Music: GV Prakash
Cinematography: Andrews
Dialogues: Swamy
Editing: Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao
Story - screenplay - direction: Karunakaran
Producer: Bhogavally Prasad
Release date
: 23 April 2010
Theater watched: Screen 3, Cinemax

Story

darlingPrabhas (Prabhas) has a childhood sweetheart named Nandini (Kajal Agarwal) and they are separated during their childhood. Nandini migrates to Swiss along with her father. Meanwhile Prabhas rejects love proposals from other girls as his heart belongs to Nandini. Prabhas gets a chance to meet Nandini for the first time after the separation during the reunion of their respective parents who have studied together. The rest of the story is all about how Prabhas wins the love of Nandini.

Artists Performance

darlingPrabhas: Prabhas is growing as an entertaining actor with each new movie. His comedy timing is impressive in this movie. His costumes and styling deserves a mention. Since there is no strength in the story line of the movie, the director had to put lot of burden on Prabhas, who delivers with elegance and flair.

darlingOthers: Kajal Agarwal’s characterization in the first half of the movie is quite dumb and is passive in the second half. Shradda Das, who plays the character of a girl chasing the hero relentlessly, does a good job. Mukesh Rushi’s work is more like a special appearance as a villain. Prabhu is adequate as hero’s father. Ahuti Prasad doesn’t look natural in his role. MS Narayana, Sivannarayana and Srinivasa Reddy are ok. The kid who played the role of heroine’s kid brother is pretty good.

Technical departments

darlingStory - screenplay - direction: Story of the movie is clichéd one. The difference between the director’s earlier movies and this one is the screenplay twist is given during the interval. Directing a screenplay based movie like this one is a tricky task. The entire Swiss episode holds the key to this screenplay. The actual story takes place only in the second half. Hence it becomes extremely important to make sure that the Swiss episode is well written. Unfortunately, the Swiss episode is dull resulting in the entire first half appear disengaged. Since the entire story takes place in the second half, the latter part appears more interesting than the first half. The concept of second half where the hero has to impress the heroine and her father despite of having another guy vying for his girl is a time-tested one as we had seen such situations in countless movies. Karunakaran, who is known for poetic thoughts, sensible humor and nice montages, leaves his strengths aside to make a movie that revolves around the characterization of hero. Hence the entire movie turned out to be a series of comedy episodes written around the hero.

darlingOther departments: Dialogues written by Swamy are good in parts.Music by GV Prakash is average. The background score should have been better. Cinematography by Andrew is very good. He explored Swiss locales well. Action episodes by Peter Heins (mostly inspired by Korean Movies) are good though look forced in the movie. Editing is adequate. Visual effects in songs (3rd song and the snow effect in Hyderabad) are commendable.

darlingAnalysis: First half of the film is not interesting. Second half gets better. The movie is good towards the last half-an-hour. Karunakaran didn’t stick to his strengths and tried to make an entertainment oriented film with a hero-centric approach. The plus points of the movie are Prabhas and a few comedy episodes in the second half. On the flip side, the Swiss episode and lack of regard for story mars the movie. We go to Karunakaran movies to watch his kind of work, not the kind of work the routine commercial directors dish out! We have to wait and see how Darling fares at box office this summer.

Ram Gopal Varma Blogs Good script

I was recently called for a meeting with an industrialist who wants to come into films. This is how the conversation went.

Industrialist: Mr.Varma, I understand that the backbone of any film is a good script. So we are investing a lot of money on good scripts.

Me: How can you invest money on a good script? You will know a good script only after the film releases.

Industrialist: What do you mean?

Me: Each and every one of the 120 odd filmmakers who come up with their films every year imagine that they have a damn good script. No filmmaker on earth ever will want to make a film on what he thinks is a bad script or even what he thinks is an average script. So it follows that a good script is only what gets proven at the box office, so you should rephrase your comment and say “I know what a good script is” and that’s what not only you but everyone of us flop filmmakers also believe.

Another investor came to meet me awhile back and the conversation went like this.

Investor: Let’s make a movie like Monsoon Wedding.

Me: But that’s already been made.

Investor: I mean as in something like that.

Me: So you mean if Monsoon Wedding is on a Punjabi wedding and if Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is on a Maharashtrian wedding, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is on a Gujarati wedding, should we make something on a Oriya or a Rajasthani wedding. Or if you think it’s the pedophile angle which worked in Monsoon Wedding, should we make something on incest?

Investor: Oh ok, I see your point. What if we make a film on a topic which is very popular?

Me: I will ask you a question. If Mira Nair came to you much before she made Monsoon Wedding and she told you that she has 2 scripts to be made for international market, one is called Monsoon Wedding, a film on a Punjabi wedding and the other is Kamasutra on a topic which is popular throughout the world, which one would you have chosen?

Investor: Kamasutra

Me: Well, my case rests. Any films greatness is after the fact. At the project intiaition stage all films are thought to be great by the people who are making it.

Telugu Movie review - Prasthanam

Jeevi rating: 3/5

Cast: Sai Kumar, Sharwanand, Sundeep Kishan, Ruby Parihar, Jeeva, Jayaprakash Reddy, Vennela Kishore, Surekha Vani, Reshma, Balayya, Pruthvi etc

Music: Mahesh Shankar
Cinematography: Shamdat
Story - screenplay dialogues - direction: Deva Katta
Producer: Ravi Vallabhaneni
Release date
: 16 April 2010
Theater watched: Screen 3, Cinemax

Story

prasthanamLoknath (Sai Kumar) takes over the reins of power from a dying man (Balayya). His step son is Mitra (Sharwanand) and own son is Chinna (Sudeep Kishan). Loknath wants to see Mitra as his heir because Mitra is a thinking man where as Chinna is hot-blooded guy with bad habits. The rest of the story is all about what happens when Chinna rebels uncontrollably.

Artists Performance

prasthanamThis movie is about characters and each and every small character makes an impact. This movie belongs to Sai Kumar. He has the most powerful voice in Telugu film industry and it is used for the maximum effect in this movie. Dramatized dialogues are delivered with utmost authority by Sai Kumar for this movie. Sharwanand surprises everybody with his portrayal of serious character. He looks like ‘ramudu manchi baludu’. But in this film he came up with terrific and serious performance. His dialogue delivery with serious tone too deserves applause. Debutant actor Sundeep Kishan comes up with an impressive act for a role that has negative shades. His voice and modulation is good. Actress Ruby Parihar doesn’t have much role to play in this movie and she is alright. Jeevais good as a contractor. Jaya Prakash and his assistant Prithvi provide ample comedy. Surekha Vani is good. I am impressive with the guy who did the role of cop and his voice is very good. Deva Katta who gave birth to Vennela Kishore as an actor with Vennela has wasted him in this movie.

Technical departments

prasthanamStory - screenplay - direction: Deva Katta is a serious filmmaker and Prasthanam is probably his kind of movie. There are quite a few good moments in this film which showcases his intensity in filmmaking. Direction of the movie is good. Screenplay should have been better. The narration of the movie is not smooth (little jerky). His writing is strong and some of the scenes are of top class. However, the pace of the film is too slow and it affects more adversely because it is a serious movie devoid of entertainment..

prasthanamOther departments: Cinematography by Shamdat is excellent. Background music by Mahesh Shankar is good. But I observed that there are no highs/lows in the background music (probably theatre sound system fault) Songa are like speed-breakers to the story. Full credit should go to the dialogue writer Deva Katta. He has written some fine serious dialogues and a few hilarious dialogues too (alpanandamtho naaluka paresukoku, chepputho kottinaa chintamane dikku..., antha black.. aayana rangu chooste ardham kavadam leda, papisti sareeranni kanna gaani paapanni kanaledu etc). Editing should have been better.

prasthanamAnalysis: Prasthanam is a political thriller about complex human relations between three main characters (Sai Kumar, Sharwanand and Sundeep Kishan). It also shows that there are no good men or bad men. It is all about war between good and bad within our mind. The plus points of this movie are strong writing and powerful performances. The negative points are not-so-gripping screenplay, slow narration and serious nature of the movie. This film is sure to win handful of awards. The commercial success of the movie will depend on how common movie lover embraces this serious and focussed political drama.
