Nandita Das was visibly upset at the organisers of IFFI for not having provided English sub-titles for her debut direcorial movie Firaaq. "How can you do this in an international festival when you have delegates from all over the world?" she said, the pain in her eyes palpable.
"There is just no excuse and it hardly matters whether the fault lies with the producers or organisers. Every delegate is important. Why should film-makers send their films if there is no quality and professionalism? I am highlighting this in a constructive manner so that such things do not happen in future."
On choosing Firaaq as her launch pad, Nandita said since she wanted to touch a human angle, she chose a script relating to a month after the Gujarat carnage in 2007. "Yes, it is a film that interweaves multiple stories over a 24-hour period as characters from different strata of society grapple with the lingering effects of violence. The movie traces the emotional journeys of ordinary people; some were victims, some perpetrators and there were others who preferred to watch it silently."
Accolades poured in for Nandita when the film earned a good number of awards at various film festivals. "Human emotions are universal and after the kind feedbacks, I appreciate that better. The high point is that the audiences all over the world have been able to empathize with the journeys of the characters everywhere. Many have appreciated that the movie gave a voice to so much that remained silent till now," Nandita concluded.
